Julio Suárez
(San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1947)

Julio Suárez’s work navigates between the limits of drawing and painting, and has been concerned for over 40 years with fundamental aspects of the medium such as: form, color, and surface.
His paintings poetically employ a language similar to that of geometric abstraction in order to delineate the presence of color on the canvas. His geometry though, is informal and intuitive; a system that follows no mathematic rigor whatsoever, but that is rather guided by feeling and subjectiveness. This allows his color fields and monochromes to feel loose, while his lines and folds generate ‘tension’ within the canvas, subverting the modernist rigor with a playful and relaxed approach.
